Through amazing photographs and the personal accounts of photographers, explorers, and scientists, Fragile offers us a unique journey along this practically unknown undersea world, which hides under the surface of our planet’s oceans.
This book has been titled “Fragil”, in the understanding that such a word is not often associated with the oceans. These are generally perceived as vast, wide reaching, and at first sight, indestructible. Powerful sharks, tunas, whales, giant squid, sperm whales, manta rays, and orcas, are unbeknownst to many, fragile, very fragile creatures. They are all part of a complex web of life to which we, fragile human beings also belong to, and to which we must add many marvelous animals, precious corals, and fishes which are disappearing at alarming rates from this universe we call ocean.
Registered in such dissimilar locations as Antarctica, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Japan, and Tasmania, each image in this book seeks to show us the incredible beauty and majesty of the inhabitants of the undersea world and at the same time bring us face to face with the urgent need of protecting them in order to guarantee the future of our planet.
The participant Protectors in this edition are: David Doubilet, Jennifer Hayes, Paul Nicklen, Cristina Mittermeier, Octavio Aburto, Bernardo Sambra, Ernie Brooks, Franco Banfi, Cristian Dimitrius, Mauricio Handler, Brian Skerry, Fabien Cousteau and David Hall.
